The company also runs the world's largest "roving syndicate" — an informal club arrangement with access to more than 50 partridge and pheasant days per season and where clients can take just one gun or part of a line without having to make larger commitments than they would wish. It is the biggest and longest-standing roving syndicate of its type in the world and, indeed, many other roving syndicates have since formed as a result.

Within the British Isles, Roxtons' clients can cherry pick from estates such as Drynachan and Drumlanrig in Scotland, Stanage on the Welsh border or Miltons, Loyton, Edgcott and Wellshead in the West Country; together with more than 50 first class estates in southern England, including Ashcombe, Prescombe, Hurdcott and Heale House.

For the ultimate in grand shooting parties, there is probably nothing to beat staying in a private castle, where the owner provides such a convivial atmosphere that guns find it hard to leave. Stanage Castle, near Ludlow in the Welsh Marches, affords not only fabulous scenery and unique drives along escarpments with panoramic views across England and Wales, but also truly great sport.

Partridge aficionados wanting to shoot outside the "English season" should head to Spain where Roxtons offers a selection of the finest shooting available. One can also shoot on Sundays — thus making a weekend a worthwhile proposition.

Four-day weekend dove shooting in Morocco at Taroudant, just south of the Atlas Mountains, has proved extremely popular as guns are, able to indulge their wives (or even themselves!) at the legendary La Gazelle d'Or.

A former hunting lodge, it offers a wonderful spa, tennis, riding, massages, guided tours into the Atlas Mountains or shopping trips into Taroudant's souks.

In Africa, guns can choose from a wide variety of train shooting safaris on the famed Rovos Rail (a beautifully restored Edwardian train) combining driven, walked-up and flighted quarries of, among others, sandgrouse, guineafowl, spurfowl, spurwing geese, wild duck, pigeon, doves and francolin. In 2011 they are running their first "Roving Rovos Rail" where guns can book individually, rather than having to book the whole train.

A new extension of the Africa programme is Kenya bush and coast holidays, dovetailing walked-up shooting in northern Kenya with game fishing at Hemingway's on Watamu Bay — a gorgeous stretch of sand, voted by The Sunday Times, as one of the "Top Ten Beaches in the World".

Roxtons has secured five-star accommodation in Argentina for its clients shooting the prolific eared dove, for which the Cordoba Province is famed.
